This shows a quaint set of buildings

August 22, 1917

Dear Maude

This shows a quaint set of buildings a mixture of cement and wood work that is very old fashioned. The up storys stick out over the bottom like “the old Curiosity Shop” It is plain and its proportions are nice. The French use the same method.

I am sending a card to Amy of one spot yesterday to match a fairly good picture but isn’t so nice as the English buildings. By the way I don’t like the French so may be prejudiced against them.

The old Castle has many hundreds of acres of fine grounds about it and pea Cocks (sic) roam about everywhere many of the trees are kept trimmed the shape of the Building (?) the full way about four feet from the top of the walls inside is about four feet wide notice the steps over the pea Cock on the walls the walls are Covered with creepers but all are quite good and very thick.

This is where we have our meals

Oxford New College Dining Hall

Dear Maude

This is where we have our meals. We must put on our best uniforms at dinner time 7 P.M.

The pictures are of different men who were masters here and they are so life like. I have seen men standing with their back to the wall near them and the pictures seemed to stand out almost as far from the wall as the live man.

In the Earth Like Rabbits

November 1, 1916

Dear Maude,

May you have a Happy Christmas. Thanks for the letters you send. They help to keep me in touch with home.

I don’t like the climate here – not for outdoor life anyway, and we are practically always out on or in the earth like rabbits. Wood is very scarce. The stuff people burn is pruned from trees each year and is about as big as grapevine clippings. They use coal, too and it’s pretty expensive now. They use little tin can stoves in the middle of their rooms and they keep pretty warm. The people wrap up much more than we do.

Houses form the banks of canals

April 18, 1916

Armentieres, April 1916

Dear Maude,

There are many places where houses form the banks of canals.  seems every house has bullet marks on it.  Some are smashed to smithereens but they don’t  bother shooting at it now.  the enemy held it for a while.  There are many stories of bad deeds done by them while they were here.

Most of the pictures have a camel in them

August 13, 1915

Dear Maude:

Most of the pictures have a camel in them. They are wonderful animals and have a soft foot that is shaped like a cow’s and spreads so as not to sink in the sand. Most of this country is sandy and only for the camel people could not get along nearly so well as they do.
